Organization Profile

Local Government Engineering Department (LGED)

About Organization: Agriculture is the backbone of Bangladesh’s economy. Rural development is an important sector for achieving country’s economic progress. In the 60s of the last millenium, four programmes were adopted for rural development known as Cumilla model. These included: Thana Training and Development Centre (TTDC) Rural Works Programme (RWP) Thana Irrigation Programme (TIP) Two Tier Cooperatives The Rural Works Programme included in the Cumilla model was basically aimed at developing rural infrastructures. Later, in the 70s an Engineering Cell was created under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Cooperatives for implementation of the programmes. In 1982 it was transformed into `Works Progreamme Wing’ under development budget. Works Programme Wing was reconstituted as Local Government Engineering Bureau (LGEB) in 1984 under revenue budget. LGEB was finally given the shape of a full fledged department renaming it as Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in 1992. LGED is currently implementing the three programmes out of four taken up under the Cumilla model except the Two Tier Cooperatives one. These programmes are being executed under three sectors namely Rural, Urban and Small Scale Water Resources Development. LGED runs on the philosophy of devolution of responsibilities as 98 percent of its total manpower discharge responsibilities at the field level.
