Organization Profile

Statistics and Information Division

About Organization: Accurate, reliable and timely statistical data is inevitable for national planning and policy making. Realizing the importance of statistics, the Father of the nation Bangbandhu Shiekh Mujibur Rahaman established Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics(BBS) in 1974 bringing together the then existing four statistical organizations and Statistical Division was established in 1975 to provide policy guidance to BBS. Since then BBS has been conducting periodic censuses and surveys under the administrative guidance of Statistics Division. Unfortunately Statistics Division was abolished in 2002 and turned into a Wing under Planning Division. After National Elections of 2008, when new democratic government was formed under the leadership of Shiekh Hasina, Statistics Division was re-established in 2010. It may be noted that during the previous tenure of Awami League government (1996 -2001), in order to ensure international standard working conditions a delightful spacious modern building named as “Parishangkhan Bhaban” was built at Agargoan, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the building on October 25, 1999. With the incremental use of Information and Communication Technology in Statistical System, to promote more effective dissemination of Statistics and to strengthen of all statistical services to meet the growing needs of the developing nation, government has renamed Statistics Division as Statistics and Informatics Division (SID) in 2012 and Statistics Act was enacted in 2013, which is considered as a step forward to build “Digital Bangladesh”.Statistics and Informatics Division is one of the three Divisions under Mininstry of Planning. With the emergence of market economy and development of Information and Communication Technology, the demand for statistics has increased tremendously. Now, statistics is essential for effective monitoring the progress towards achieving the MDGs, poverty reduction, food security and nutrition, social development, macroeconomic performance, climate change and environmental sustainability. As Bangladesh is gradually moving towards middle income nation, statistics could be considered as the only right tool for evidence based policy making and proper program intervention to ensure the optimum use of public resources and measuring the progress. Since its inception BBS has been producing official statistics to help decision making and development progress and Statistics and Informatics Division (SID) is responsible for formulation and revision of policy on statistics and informatics.
